Not sure if I should start a new thread or add to the older one found here?: W2K3 Terminal Server / QB2006 Ent. + QODBC

I am using Alpha Five Software to create a solution that will be run on a Window 2003 Server in Terminal Server mode. There will be a maximum of 5 simultaneous users; normally 2 or 3. Initially, I am trying to keep this as simple as possible. I will add functionality once I get the basics done. My customer is a sand and gravel trucking company that has used QB Enterprise for years (plus lots of extra paperwork and wasted energy). My database will help with quotes, orders, dispatch, invoicing customers, paying drivers and paying the sand/gravel suppliers.

My current plan is to do a once-a-day update that will sync customers, vendors and invoice items between QB and the Alpha Five database. Other than keeping these lists in sync, the Alpha Five database will be designed to operate independently from QB. Fortunately, for this project, customers, vendors and invoice items do not change often. I may decide to always use QB to make additions and changes to these lists. I suppose in this "read-only" scenario I could get by with the Read-Only QODBC Driver? Other than the Terminal Server/Multi-User fiasco, it should be easy to view the live QB data for these lists in my external database? Thus, a once-a-day sync will not be necessary? Just make the change/addition in QB and it will appear live in the external database?

The next phase will be to write the basic invoicing data back into Quickbooks and allow QB to take over the billing/receive payments process from there. This step will require the Read/Write QODBC Driver. I think I will use a batch procedure to write the invoices to the QB data file? This can be run once or twice a day by a designated Terminal Server user.

So, Tom (or whoever), will this work? I am a bit confused by the information in the older thread referenced above. Also, this thread: QODBC Multi-user setup added to my confusion! Can I accomplish what I have outlined above with one QODBC Desktop Read/Write Driver license plus some free Read-Only licenses? It appears that there may be some unresolved issues with multi-users and/or a Terminal Server environment?

What about this information from Intuits Quickbooks Support website which indicates that the QODBC Server Edition is required when running in a terminal services environment?:

>>>>>>>
QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 7.0

"You must have Integrated Application preferences" when using the Open Data Base Connectivity (ODBC) driver

What is happening?
Running in a terminal services environment the message "You must have Integrated Application preferences" when using the Open Data Base Connectivity (ODBC) driver, logged in as as a user.

Why is this happening?
The QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions standard ODBC driver was not designed to work in a Terminal Server environment.

Detailed Instructions...
To resolve the above issue:

Purchase the QODBC Driver for QuickBooks 2008 USA Web Server Edition from Flexquarters.

Your feedback is appreciated!

  1. Am I going to be able to do what I want?
  2. What QODBC product do I need? Can I get by with the QODBC Desktop Read/Write or do I need the QODBC Server Edition?
  3. I now realize that the "read-only" mode that I discussed above may not work in a multi-user, Terminal Server environment to see the live QB data? In that case, maybe the once-a-day sync (or, as needed) will work?
  4. Or, maybe the QODBC Server Edition will solve everything? Maybe not?
  5. Are there detailed (idiot-proof) instructions to help with my situation?
  6. Please talk slowly so that I can understand!
  7. I currently have the 2006 Desktop Read/Write and QB Enterprise 2008.

Thanks,

All you need is one copy of the QODBC Desktop Read/Write as only one license is required per computer (not user)  This is installed on the Windows Terminal Server under the console admin (local session) account and each Terminal Users account as per: W2K3 Terminal Server / QB2006 Ent. + QODBC  The QODBC remote connector is setup in each Terminal Users account to talk to the iBiz Remote Connector thats running under the console admin (local session) account along with QuickBooks.

You will need to purchase a QODBC v8 Read/Write CD Key to use QuickBooks 2008. The QODBC 2006 Desktop Read/Write CD Key will not work with QuickBooks 2008.

The information on Intuit's Support Site is incorrect. Only one version of QODBC can be installed on the Windows Terminal Server.
