we are running version 8.00.00.242 using the default configuration, using the file that's now open in Quickbooks. We receive the above error message when trying to connect to the open quickbook file. We receive the same message when we run the test connection to Quickbooks in the General Set-up section. I uninstalled and reinstalled Qodbc - same error message upon reinstallation.

My issue may be that we have both Quickbooks 2007 PremierAccountant and Quickbooks 2008 PremierAccountant versions installed on the computer running the driver (Dell Latitude D830 running Vista sp1). The driver was working fine -- I don't recall if I had Quickbooks 2008 installed the last time I used Qodbc. Can I have both versions installed? We are a small CPA firm supporting our clients running anything north of 2005...

Both program files contain QBW32PremierAccountant.exe

Our use is very vanilla -- linking Account and Transaction tables to an Access 2007 .accdb file.

As always, help is much appreciated.

No, you can only have one version of QuickBooks installed as there can only be one version of the Intuit SDK in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit folder. You most likely will be able to connect using QuickBooks 2008, but QuickBooks 2007 will now not work with QODBC.

Hi Tom, I have a bit of a mess. I uninstalled both Quickbooks 2007 and Quickbooks 2008 and qodbc. I reinstalled Quickbooks 2008 and qodbc -- same error message. I ran the registerall.zip and reboot.bat per your forum threads -- same result - error 80040408. At present, I've unistalled qb 2008 and qodbc, deleted Intuit\Common Files folder and any quickbooks and qodbc folders present after the uninstall and rebooted. I was planning on searching the registry for any remaining keys related to Quickbooks or qodbc before attempting to reinstall. Any suggestions would be most appreciated or instructions on what registry keys I should look for and delete or modify.

Thanks Tom.

You need to do the first time connect procedure again (as in: How do I connect to QuickBooks for the first time? ) which means that QuickBooks will need to be running and the company file open first. To connect, the DSN setting must be changed back to "Use the company file that's now open in QuickBooks" and once everything works again, you can reset the "Locate company file" setting.

And don't use MS Access to fix this, use VB Demo because MS Access stores the original connection settings. You will need to unlink and relink all the QODBC tables in MS Access once everything is working correctly again.

Hi Tom, been doing this. I'm familiar with the first time connect drill and have always used 'use the company file that's now open'. Been logging into a sample company as Admin.

I'll reinstall now and post back my result.

Tom, reinstall failed - same error 80040408.

My process:

Uninstalled all versions of Quickbooks (2007 and 2008) and qodbc through control panel uninstall

deleted Common Files\Intuit folder and any Quickbook 2007, Quickbook 2008, qodbc folders that remained after above uninstall prcess

ran regedit and searched for instances of 'Quickbooks' - deleted keys where found, attempting to delete all references to Quickbooks.

reinstalled Quickbooks 2008 Premier Accountant and Qodbc desktop Read Write Version 8.00.00.241

Started Quickbooks 2008, logged into sample service company as admin

Reviewed qodbc set-up noting using company file that's open in Quickbooks, data source name Quickbooks Data

Ran VB Demo 32 - add new connection, machine data source Quickbooks Data - failed with above error code

Activated our qodbc and ran VB demo again -- failed with above error code.

I'm stumped.

What would you suggest is the next step?

Thanks Tom,

Did you remember to register QuickBooks? Integrated Applications like QODBC don't work if the copy of QuickBooks is unregistered.

You must be logged in as a Standard Windows Vista user, not a admin account.  Both QuickBooks and the QODBC application accessing the SDK should be run with standard user permissions (NOT elevated to run as administrator). The Vista user account must have its User Account Control (UAC) set to On

Thanks Tom -- I believe we meet all the criteria you mention in your last post. Qodbc was running fine - on June 6th I worked on a client running QB 2007 to analyze their job costing utilizing qodbc v 8.00.00.242. The only change that may have occurred was that I may have install QB 2008 on my notebook thus having both QB premier accountant 2007 and 2008 on my notebook. Nothing has changed regarding user accounts. I'm logged in as a standard widows vista user and both quickbooks and qodbc are run with standard user permissions, not elevated. the Vista user account is set to On.

I reviewed your Vista instructions prior to the initial installation of qodbc and it was working great until this error poped up this last week.

Hi Tom, I've not received a reply to my last post -- to the best of our knowledge we have Qodbc installed correctly with only Quickbooks 2008 installed on my notebook, including the Vista requirements. We are unable to connect to the open Quickbooks company using the VB demo.

At present, I deactivated qodbc on my notebook and activated on our terminal server, running Windows 2003 Server. Our terminal server has only Quickbooks Premiere Accountant Edition 2007 installed. I've successfully installed qodbc, activated, connected to our client's Quickbook file and completed my current client's project. At present, I am the only user of qodbc.

My issue is that we need to install Quickbooks Premiere Accountant Edition 2008 on the terminal server as we have a couple of clients who are using 2008 and others will soon be migrating to 2008.

If I understand your previous threads, the primary problem was installing an older version of Quickbooks after the instalation and activation of qodbdc. If I install QB 2008 on the terminal server, my understanding is that qodbc will work with QB 2008 but not QB 2007 - but I will be able to run both 2007 and 2008. The nature of our practice is supporting our client's running QB 2005 up -- we frequently use gotoassist remote access software to support and train our clients on the version that they are using. Practically, most will be using either 2007 or 2008 -- I can workaround the small number of clients running older versions and use qodbc with only the 'current' version of Quickbooks, in this case 2008.

As always, your thoughts and recommendations and greatly appreciated.

Thanks Tom,

Bill

The Intuit SDK only supports one version of QuickBooks. We do not recommend installing multiple country or different year versions of QuickBooks on any computer that's using QODBC .... fullstop

Thanks Tom, we'll follow your advice and have only one version of Quickbooks installed. What is the recommended process when we switch to a more current version? Is it as simple as uninstalling Quickbooks 2007 and installing Quickbooks 2008? Do I need to uninstall qodbc before installing Quickbooks 2008? Do I need to delete any additional folders?

Let me know your recommended process.

Thanks,

bill

When a new version of QuickBooks is installed it detects that a earlier version of QuickBooks already exists and asks if you want to override it. The answer should be "Yes". The QuickBooks installer then takes care of the rest.
