I'm attempting an issue a lot of people with Quickbooks seem to have; be able to change/adjust the BOM for an assembly on the fly.  I know there are other programs out there than claim do this, but they cost thousands of dollars.  I believe with Microsoft Access and QODBC I can do this.  In Access I have a drop down box that chooses the Assembly, then a subform shows the items in the assembly, I have query copy the items to another table so the users can modify these as needed.  Once the assembly is built, I run a inventory adjustment to remove the items and increase the assembly.  1.  I'll take any advice the forum members could give me on this.  2.  When the inventory adjustment is done do I have to be in single user mode?  3.  If so, from MS Access and QODBC can I run a query late at night that switches to single user mode, does the adjustment, and then flips back to multiuser?  Thanks in advance!

QuickBooks already has a flexible assembly, there called groups which allow you to anything you want on the fly and doesn't take stock out of inventory. When you build assemblies (see: How do I Build Assemblies? ) stock is committed and QuickBooks will not let you make any BOM changes to the assembly... full stop.

You can change an assembly that hasn't been built, but once it has it's, "GAME OVER", and it's time to simply make another assembly (Mark2, Mark3, and so on) if you want to change it or just use a group!

I have looked at groups, but I don't think they will do it either.  If I have group A of 4 items and I change 1 item for a build of 100 A, the next time that I build A I want the proper build to show and not the modified one from last time.  I also don't think that groups give costing and sales like assemblies do.  I think my plan will work which is to take the original build, modify if needed in access, and then do an inventory adjustment back from access to quickbooks to increase the assembly count and decrease the item counts used to build the assembly.  Access also gives me the ability to add text areas for work tickets that Quickbooks does not have.  We are switching to Quickbooks from Peachtree and I must say Peachtree has a much better work ticket/ assembly system, but I believe with Quickbooks, QODBC, and Access I can make an awesome, flexible system.

Sorry, QODBC uses Intuit's qbXML SDK to connect to QuickBooks which means all the rules that apply using the QuickBooks User Interface also applies to QODBC. If you come up with method to do what you want to do using the QuickBooks User Interface that works, then you will also be able to do it using QODBC.

BTW: You can't build groups, inventory for group items are only removed from stock when the group is invoiced.
