Hello,

I"m trying to set up QODBC To allow remote access while QB is not running.  I can get it to successfully connect when QB is running, but it refuses to connect when it's not.  I've followed the instructions in this thread to set up remote access and this thread for general QODBC setup but neither solution seems to work.

In the IBiz Integrator's log window I get the following error message when I attempt to connect:

[9/24/2007 5:14:45 PM - 127.0.0.1] Client has connected.
[9/24/2007 5:14:45 PM - 127.0.0.1] Connection refused: Basic IFVSTCA9IDoxMjM=

[9/24/2007 5:14:45 PM - 127.0.0.1] Client has disconnected.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks.

Switch off the Remote Connector. Now does the connection work when using VB Demo without QuickBooks running on the computer running QuickBooks?

BTW: The company file full path should be as it appears on the computer running QuickBooks (and not the path from the remote computer).

I currently have 2 QODBC data sources specified...both are set up identically with the exception that the second one is set up to use the remote connector.  I can use the normal, non-remote connection just fine when QuickBooks is not running.  This works fine whether the Remote Connector is running or not.

The Remote Connector, however, only works when I set it up to "use the company file that's now open in QuickBooks."  This, of course, only works when QuickBooks is running.  If I specify a company file (using the full, absolute path on the machine where QuickBooks would theoretically be running), the QODBC data source set up to use the Remote Connector behaves as I described previously.  Each time I attempt to either test the connection in the QODBC setup screen or use the VB Demo to connect, I'm repeatedly prompted for a password for the Remote Connector and the previously mentioned error shows up in the Remote Connector log.

I have tried to configure Remote Connector both with and without authentication enabled, and have tried both the password specified in Remote Connector and the password on the file I'm attempting to open with the same results every time.

The password is the QuickBooks login details, not a remote password you make up. You need to configure the remote connector on the machine with QuickBooks first and then copy the settings to the remote computer. A number of QODBC settings are also global so you can't have one DSN in normal mode and another using the remote connector. The correct way is to specify all the connection parameters within the application, see: How do I build a connection string with all the available QODBC parameters? for more.

What do you mean by "QuickBooks login details?"  Do you mean the password on the file in question (ie, the password that QuickBooks prompts when you attempt to open the file) or the password specified in the Security tab of the Remote Connector when Require Authentication is checked?  I have tried both combinations of username/password and I still get that (very cryptic) error in the Remote Connector log.

All of these attempts are currently being made on a single machine and are still failing.

Which settings are global?

The ultimate point of me doing all of this is to allow Crystal Reports to connect to a remote copy of QB.  Ultimately, one copy of Crystal Reports is going to connect to multiple remote copies of QuickBooks all running on seperate machines.  Is this even going to be possible given the globalization of certain settings in the driver?

The password specified in the Security tab of the Remote Connector when Require Authentication is checked can only be the password that QuickBooks prompts when you attempt to open the file.

All the Remote Servers will need to have the iBiz Remote Connector running in the system tray and mostly likely QuickBooks open.

You would be far better off trying QReportBuilder as you can connect to multiple QuickBooks company files (one at a time of course) and load the infomation into a local file and compare all of them that way instead.

Ah, I see. I went ahead and changed the authentication settings to use the same username/password as prompted by QuickBooks, but I still get that same cryptic error: 9/24/2007 5:14:45 PM - 127.0.0.1] Client has connected. [9/24/2007 5:14:45 PM - 127.0.0.1] Connection refused: Basic IFVSTCA9IDoxMjM= [9/24/2007 5:14:45 PM - 127.0.0.1] Client has disconnected. Do you have any idea what that error is? Is that the hashed http authentication string that it's spitting out (there seems to possibly be an unprintable character there at the end.) I'll look into QReportBuilder (I'm just an integrator here, I'll have to swing it by the company I'm doing this for). I appreciate your continued patience and assistance with me, Tom. :) Thanks, Forest

To connect the iBiz Remote Connector for the first time, QuickBooks must be running and the company file opened and the QuickBooks user logged in as the QuickBooks administrator using the "admin" account. You cannot use a user account.

See:  I do not want to install QuickBooks on every machine. How do I setup QODBC Remote?
