Hello, we developed a reporting interface for QB Pro 2008 using your QODBC Driver. Thanks to Tom for directing us towards the Transactions stored procedure. Got it to work with the sample company that comes with QB. Now trying to test with a real-world QBW file from a prospect - and QODBC can't open it.

Some comments:

1. It seems QB Pro 2008 can't open QB Enterprise files. Pardon my ignorance..  Rather not invest in QB Enterprise and every other flavour of QB to do testing of the app.

2. The prospect uses QB Enterprise. Not the same version we worked with via QODBC.  but we're not really using the QB app, just poking the data.

3. Would the prospect first need to install QODBC driver, then make it available (to Flexquarters QODBC)? I was expecting that they could just xmit the QBW file and I could test it out. Doesn't seem to work the way I expected.

Thank you very much. I'm going to give Mark/Sales a call. We're hoping to be a reseller.

D'

In order to open a Enterprise company file you must also have QuickBooks Enterprise installed on your computer. QuickBooks Pro will not open a Enterprise company file. QODBC works with Simple Start, Pro, Premier and Enterprise edtions of QuickBooks. We connect to QuickBooks via Intuit's qbXML SDK and QuickBooks talks to the company file, so you just can't poke at a .qbw file.

Your prospect can install QODBC and use it in Enterprise Read Only Desktop mode for free (providing it's the USA edtion of QuickBooks Enterprise).

Hi Tom,

I'm in the same boat.  I've done all this development between my MS Access app and Quickbooks Pro and I have a client that is interested in using these features, but they are running the Enterprise version of QuickBooks.

Natually we will want to test these features on a copy of their QB data before taking the integration live.  It sounds like our options are either I buy a copy of the Enterprise version of QB and test on my system, or can we install one of my QODBC licenses I've purchased on their system, and then connect my app with their data via the QODBC driver?

From a developers standpoint, I'm a little worried about trying to figure things out when I can't program in the same environment as the app will be running.   Can I expect the queries I've developed with a connectiong to QB Pro to work just as well when my app is connected to QB Enterprise???

Thanks,

David

The best thing is to say, QuickBooks Enterprise is different to QuickBooks Pro. How do expect to support a QuickBooks Enterprise user when you are only using QuickBooks Pro? Their screens are diffferent, they have additional options, additional entries in screens etc.

I suggust you consider signing up as a Intuit QuickBooks Community Developer. Community Developers have the option to purchase software via the QuickBooks Not-for-Resale Software Purchase program which includes QuickBooks Enterprise at discounted prices.

As far as QODBC is concerned, it's based on the feature set seen in QuickBooks Premier, any additional features seen in QuickBooks Enterprise are not exposed in Intuit's qbXML SDK and therefore not available to QODBC.

Anything developed using QODBC will work on Premier or Enterprise.

If you have QuickBooks Premier, then anything you do with QODBC will work with your clients using QuickBooks Enterprise. The only thing to note that the free (bundled) QODBC Enterprise Desktop Edition that comes with QuickBooks Enterprise (in USA only) only operates in read only mode. A full QODBC version CD Key is required for read write opterations.
