We have purchased the server version of QODBC and have 2 servers, A is a terminal server / fileserver and B is our SQL server / Web server.  Quickbooks Enterprise 9 is installed on server A and we want to create a web application on Server B that can access the quickbooks data.  I have seen in the forums bits and pieces and it seems like there are several ways I could go, RDS vs installing qb on server b... I was wondering if someone could outline for me the broad steps of good deployment plan for my situation.

Thanks!

PS: Has anyone had success using SQL Server Integration Services with QODBC?

You will need to use RDS (see: Accessing QuickBooks data remotely via QODBC using RDS ) or install a QuickBooks Enterprise 9 client on your SQL server / Web server.

There are a number of posts on SSIS, see: click here.

Thanks for your reply.  I am also noticing that the license I bought is for 2008 server read write.  Is this a free upgrade to 2009 or do i need to upgrade it before i start this?

Thanks!

Are there any advantages / disadvantages to my using RDS vs installing QB client on that server (ie whats the best way)?

Installing a QB client on that server ensures that QuickBooks and the company file is available for use all the time by the Web Application.  Also to reset you only need to reboot one server, not two.

Thanks for your reply.  I have six or seven company files that I am trying to report on with the qodbc driver.  Does this necessitate my using RDS or can I create multiple connections to different files on the same computer?

Thanks

The rule is QuickBooks can only have ONE COMPANY file open at the one time. So the connection must be closed before opening another company file or you can have multiple computers each running their only company file that you can connect to using RDS all at once through multiple connections.
