owners of V5.0 looking to test 'server edition' in V6.0 |

Hello-
Copying QODBC licenses between machines was such a nuisance we were forced to buy two copies of 5.0 pro read-write: one for development, one for production, although the two copies are never in use at the same time. We then outgrew QB, upgraded to their latest Enterprise Edition, and had to upgrade the production copy of QODBC to 6.0 pro read-write.
We are considering serving some QB data up through an asp.net web app and would like to try the 6.0 'server edition' on the development machine. We uninstalled 5.0, installed 6.0 and walked through the DCOM setup only to get an error on the final step: "Server edition of QODBC is required to use the DCOM servers". Is there a way to test this functionality for 30 days? Or do we miss out, having already spent money at flexquarters? (see comments above)
Related: can an existing (non-web) app *share* a 'server edition' QODBC license/data-source with a web app? Legally? Technically?
Thanks for any help- Mike Otten Printglobe |

Uninstalling a licensed copy of QODBC v5 from a computer doesn't remove the license footprint. So QODBC v6 will run in your v5 license mode. Why? We did this so v5 license holders can update their driver to our latest DLL for bug fixes.
The ways forward are:
a) Purchase a QODBC v6 Server Edition Licesne for the Development Machine b) Install a fresh QODBC evaluation on a Web Server (other than on the Production or Development Machine) c) Purchase a QODBC Priority Support Incident and request a 30 day v6 CD-KEY to overwrite the v5 license on your Development Machine. d) Use the QODBC Remote Connector and IBiz Remote Connector instead of the QODBC DCOM Servers. e) Use a QuickBooks Sample Company file as the QODBC DCOM Servers work with these types of company files without needing a QODBC v6 Server Edition License.
A QODBC license is required for each computer it's used with. Moving a license back and forth between a production and a developement machine is a technical breach of the licensing terms.

Yes, the QODBC DCOM Servers are used to connect a application running as or connected thru a Windows Service to QuickBooks. Although, I have seen non-Windows Service desktop applications complain and not connect when "Use DCOM Servers" is checked in the QODBC Setup screen. |
