Hi,

i am trying to install QODBC on my vista machine but i am getting and error during installation "The file C:\Windows\ODBCINST.INI could not be opened".

I am using Vista, QODBC version 8.00.00.237 and Quickbooks Premier 2007/08 (Australian Version).

I have tried to follow the instructions given in the thread about installation on Vista (Here) and also seen (but not really benefited from) a thread posted about a similar problem (Here).

I have opened C:\WIndows\ODBCINST.INI and the following text exists within the file, which makes me think that QODBC actually could open the file:

----------
[MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver (32 bit)]
Driver=C:\Windows\system32\myodbc3.dll
Setup=C:\Windows\system32\myodbc3S.dll
32Bit=1
[ODBC 32 bit Drivers]
MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver (32 bit)=Installed
QODBC Driver for QuickBooks (32 bit)=Installed
[QODBC Driver for QuickBooks (32 bit)]
Driver=C:\Windows\system32\fqqb32.dll
Setup=C:\Windows\system32\fqqb32.dll
32Bit=1
------------

Also,  while i don't think this is of any influence, i have also read that the version of Quickbooks we are using should work on Vista with QODBC (Quicken Support Page).

Is anyone able to advise what is happening here? Have i misunderstood something or missed a step?

I don't have an XP machine readily available, so i'm really hoping i can get this to work on Vista.

Thanks and Regards,

nick

Sorry, as per Microsoft Windows Vista Update Alert  :

For QuickBooks users outside of USA
All non-USA versions of QuickBooks will not be able to run QuickBooks and QODBC on Windows Vista until further notice. Because of the limitations of the SDK release used in QuickBooks outside USA, QODBC cannot be used under the Microsoft Vista operating system. We recommend that you keep on using Windows XP in the meantime and hope that Intuit will rectify this issue in 2008.

You can view the QuickBooks announcements made regarding Windows Vista outside USA for your region at:
Australia/New Zealand/Singapore: http://www.quicken.com.au/support/vistaUpdate.aspx
United Kingdom (UK): http://www.quickbooks.co.uk/store/en/quickbooks/vista_faq.jsp?pd=vista

Thanks for the quick reply Tom. The Australian site says that Quickbooks 2007/08 is compatible with Vista. There is no mention of QODBC.

I took this to mean that both products would work, given that QODBC is Vista compatible - have i misinterpreted something here? Is there something specific to the way QODBC operates with the Australian version that means that whilst each component should work, the link won't?

Also, (final question - i promise!), why am i getting an install error? Is QODBC identifying that it won't work with the Aus system already during installation? (I have already installed Quickbooks 2007/08 on the Vista machine...)

Thanks again,

NIck

The Australian version of QuickBooks 2007/08 still has qbXML SDK v3 and is four years old. The USA SDK version is currently v7 for QuickBooks 2008. Changes must be made by Quicken in Sydney for the SDK to work under Microsoft Windows Vista. QODBC sends xml requests through the SDK.
