I have tried multiple times to install the latest version driver on a Vista machine.  Even in Admin or Standard rights i get the "Can't Open QODBCINIT.ini" file.  i can open just fine manually.  All text is legible.

I read through other posts and tried suggestions, even earlier version, to no avail.

Tom, please advise suggestion to get it to install.  Seems to be some security issue but all properties show it is fully accessible.

Thanks,

You must start the install logged into Microsoft Windows Vista as a standard user and install the driver in administrative mode as shown in: How do I install and connect QODBC using Microsoft Vista?

Also, the Vista user account must have its User Account Control (UAC) set to On (as recommended by Microsoft).

That is exactly the steps I followed.  I used a Standard User account, right clicked on .exe and ran in Admin mode.  The user account UAC is set to on.

Any other solutions?  Ideas?

Ok, the last stupid reason I can think of is: QODBC must be installed on Drive C: and not Drive D: or a network drive. Also make sure you're using the lastest version of QODBC (see: How can I get the latest version of QODBC?) and you're using Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate..... not Home Basic.

All of that is True.  It's on Drive C (no drive d) and i have tried the Latest version of QODBC.

Please help.

This looks like a MS Windows Vista security issue. I've reported this issue to the QODBC Software Engineer under QSupport Ticket ID: BR00000081 for further investigation. There is no time frame set for when I will receive a reply.

Please try these steps manually that the installer does and see if they produce any errors?

First off, after install verify that you have a folder called: c:\ProgramData\QODBC Driver for QuickBooks and the QODBCINST.INI file is in it?

Then at the Command Prompt check that you have an environment variable called ALLUSERSPROFILE by running the SET command?

Then try:
copy "%WINDIR%\odbcinst.ini" "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\QODBC Driver for QuickBooks\odbcinst.ini"

Followed by:
Icacls "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\QODBC Driver for QuickBooks\odbcinst.ini" /Grant:r everyone:F

Then see if QODBC works. Please let me know if this fixes the problem.
