Can you provide the proper Link.Catalog.Schema.Object terminology.  I'm supposing it's something like QODBC.___.___.Customer.  Can you help fill-in the blanks.

I'm encountering limititations in using OPENQUERY statements in that they cannot be 'built on the fly' (or do you have a working scheme for that?, i.e. using variables in query strings).

I'm suspecting that using four-part naming will overcome these limitations (At a severe performance hit?).  Any guidance you have regarding this would be appreciated.

Most of the time I don't see many users using a catalog or schema name in the four-part name:
linked_server_name.catalog.schema.object_name.

Below are a few examples based a Link Server named "QODBC":-

  • SELECT * FROM QODBC...HOST

  • SELECT * FROM QODBC...HostSupportedVersions

  • SELECT ListID, Name FROM QODBC...Employee

  • SELECT ListID, Name FROM QODBC...Customer

  • SELECT ListID, Name, CompanyName FROM QODBC...Vendor

  • UPDATE QODBC...Vendor SET "CompanyName" = 'Bayshore Water, LLC' WHERE "Name" = 'Bayshore Water'

  • INSERT INTO QODBC...Customer (Name) Values ('Test Customer 201')
