I have downloaded the Qodbc version 8.
I ran the exe with Administrative rights. The setup start and when progress bar is at 18 % It pops up with error message
"Could not open c:\windows\Odbcinst.ini"
I have checked the rights for Odbcinst.ini file and it has full control.
Also as per Vista I have created c:\Documents and Settings\All users\Application data\QODBC Driver for QuickBooks\ODBCINST.ini.
But still I did not get success installing QODBC Driver.

Try opening ODBCinst.ini with Notepad and check that the file has normal text only in it and that the labels are in tack. If you can't install QODBC v8.00.00.237, try installing using Build 234 instead. You can download QODBC v8.00.00.234 from here: http://www.qodbc.com/download/build234.exe
You must start the install logged into Microsoft Windows Vista as a standard user and install the driver in administrative mode as shown in: How do I install and connect QODBC using Microsoft Vista?
Also, the Vista user account must have its User Account Control (UAC) set to On (as recommended by Microsoft).
And last but not least, QODBC must be installed on Drive C: ! |

Don't know, no reply was posted by vins. This looks like a MS Windows Vista security issue. I've reported this issue to the QODBC Software Engineer under QSupport Ticket ID: BR00000081 for further investigation. There is no time frame set for when I will receive a reply. |

After 2 hours with Vaio support and then 3 hours with Microsoft:
Here is what they say:
Symptom: rThe user is attempting to run the program \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ieuser.exe which is attempting to perform a file copy operation that is blocked by User Access Control. Cause: The application \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ieuser.exe is trying to copy a file to a non-standard location : \Windows\Installer\{16D9439B-DF3D-43D1-A727-4B335300D07A}\_2cd672ae.exe. This is prohibited based on the current User Access Control settings. Details: Operation on file "\Windows\Installer\{16D9439B-DF3D-43D1-A727-4B335300D07A}\_2cd672ae.exe" excluded from virtualization. Resolution: If applicable, advise the user to can contact to obtain a version of the software that is compatible with Windows Vista. Alternatively, the user can try to configure the application to copy files to the Program Files directory. |

Please try these steps manually that the installer does and see if they produce any errors?
First off, after install verify that you have a folder called: c:\ProgramData\QODBC Driver for QuickBooks and the QODBCINST.INI file is in it? Then at the Command Prompt check that you have an environment variable called ALLUSERSPROFILE by running the SET command?
Then try: copy "%WINDIR%\odbcinst.ini" "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\QODBC Driver for QuickBooks\odbcinst.ini"
Followed by: Icacls "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\QODBC Driver for QuickBooks\odbcinst.ini" /Grant:r everyone:F
Then see if QODBC works. Please let me know if this fixes the problem. |

Tom, Thank you for continuing to work on this.
I tried the suggested steps, the first step came back with an error mentioning File Not Found.
The second step did the same. I did modify paths but still could not find path.
Any other suggestions? |

For the QODBC installation and these manual steps to work you must have a odbcinst.ini file in C:\WINDOWS. QODBC can also only be installed on Drive C:, if Vista is not installed on drive C:, then QODBC will not work. |
