I have Quickbooks Premier Accountant Edition 2008.

I'm trying to create a remote server through Sybase to the QB data source, but I always get the ERROR 80040408 - Could not start QuickBooks.

I searched through this forum and found info on copying the QBW32.exe to QBW32<flavor>.exe, but my install of QB already had QBW32.exe and QBW32PremierAccountant.exe in the folder.  I also made sure that my copy of Quickbooks was registered.

Could there be any other reason why I would be getting this error?  I can "Test the Connection" just fine through the data source.

Thanks!
~Joanna

I guess Sybase is running as a Windows Service here? So the QODBC Server Edition and the DCOMs will need to be configured. See: QODBC and Windows Service for an example.

I will take a look at that.

Using an earlier version of QODBC and a different Quickbooks, I was able to get it to work just fine.  This was a few months ago.  With the latest QODBC and my Premier Accountant version of Quickbooks, it no longer seems to work.  Is there any reason why it would stop working all of a sudden?

Thanks again,
Joanna

I'm not sure I need the server edition, but how would I get an evaluation copy of it to see if it works?

Check the about tab in your QODBC Setup Screen for the licensed version of QODBC you are using. Regardless of the license type, if you open one of the QuickBooks sample company files you can can use QODBC in server edition mode and connect using the QODBC DCOMs.

With later versions of QuickBooks, unattended mode requires QuickBooks to be closed to connect, unlike QuickBooks 2005 where we always needed QuickBooks to be running. See: How do I setup QODBC to auto-login into QuickBooks and start it if it's not running? for more info.

Thank you Tom, using the DCOMS worked great.

Is there a standard for how to know when DCOMs would be required?  Is there a certain version of Quickbooks where it starts to become required or is it not at all dependent on the version of Quickbooks?

The use of the QODBC Server Edition and the QODBC DCOMs is required by any application that is either a Windows Service or is called through a Windows Serivce. For example web pages run through IIS, which is a Windows Service. Even a VB program called by Windows Scheduled Tasks gets called as a service. The QODBC Desktop Edition is for applications that are run by a user on the computer desktop.
